Brede Farmer’sMarket needsmore support

But now the weekly market needs renewed support in order to continue raising money for charity and good causes.

The market was set up by Liz Stevens to help raise funds for the upkeep of the village hall and has become an institution where villagers can meet and chat over a cup of coffee.

Since opening its doors it has raised an impressive £15,000 for local charities.

Liz said: “At 40p per cup or 50p per mug or £1 for a cafetiere we have slowly built up to this marvellous total thanks to the support of our loyal customers.

“We like to support local charities, particularly children’s charities, but if one of the volunteer ladies from Brede Friendly Circle, who serve the refreshments, has a particular favourite then that charity will receive a donation.

“ We have recently made a donation to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution which helps struggling farmers; we are a Farmers’ Market after all.

“Serving tea and coffee has added a third dimension to the Market. As well as supporting local producers and raising money for the Village Hall, the Market has turned into a social occasion for people to meet up with friends and chat over a cuppa.

“There is a regular base of stalls such as bread, fish, milk, vegetables, meat, game, apple juice, quiches and cakes plus a changing variety of gluten free products, healthy dips, Afro-Caribbean food and home-made ice cream.

“Plants, arts and crafts, and books make up a proportion of the rest of the stalls.”

Liz added: “We were thrilled to get a mention in the Sunday Telegraph in February by the Celebrity TV chef, Valentine Warner, who said that Brede Market was his favourite local market!

“Thank you once again to our customers for helping us to reach this wonderful total.”
