Brede village voice

The Jubilee Bench is now in place at the Recreation Ground and is the work of two of our local village craftsmen.

The wood construction was done by Chris Allum and the engraving work by Robert Pearce. They have made a fine job of it and let’s hope that it is not vandalised after everybody’s efforts in getting it made.

One of the series of ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Mornings’ in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support is being held in Udimore Hall today, Friday, September 28, from 10.00 am to 12 noon. Various stalls will be there including produce, cakes and arts and crafts items.

Brede Mothers’ Union will be meeting again next Wednesday, October 3, in Brede Church at 2.30 pm. Their guest speaker will be Sue Lee with a talk entitled ‘Beneath your Feet’.

The Brede Giants Pumping Engines are on view again at Brede Waterworks next Saturday, October 6, from 10 am to 4.00 pm. Parking is free, refreshments and souvenir items are available. New members for the Society are welcome as is anyone who likes working with heritage machinery. Also next Saturday there is another Village Dance from 7.30 pm at the Village Hall. The programme as usual will include favourite dances from ballroom, sequence, Latin to line dancing. Entrance is £3.00.

Tables can be booked for the BOB’s Quiz Night on Saturday, October 13, at the Village Hall. Tables are up to 8 people and the entrance is £5.00 per person. Bring your own food and drink. To book tables call 01424-883548. Proceeds will go towards some more play equipment at the Recreation Ground. Any raffle prizes would be gratefully received.

Thus year’s Poppy Appeal will be starting at the end of October. As we can never have too many helpers, if you think you might have a few hours to spare to help sell a few poppies house-to-house between then and Remembrance Day on November 11 would you please contact Mrs. Beryl Crouch on 01424-882120 who will be able to give you all the details.

Just a reminder about the Brede Scout Group. The new term is now well under way and the Group would welcome any boys or girls who would like to join either the Brede Cubs or Brede Beavers. The groups run during term-time only on Mondays at the Scout Hut in Stubb Lane with the Beavers meeting from 5.30 to 6.30 pm and Cubs from 6.30 to 8.00 pm. Age groups are 6-8½ years for Beavers or 8-10½ years for Cubs. If any of them would like to join, then go along and see how much fun you can have, or you can contact Catherine Southgate (Beavers) on 01424-883585 or Colin Ward (Cubs) on 07980-171877.

The Mobile Library calls again next week on Tuesday, October 2, from 3.00 to 3.40 pm in Oakhill Drive and 3.50 to 4.25 pm in Reedswood Road. It will also be at the Village Hall on Thursday, October 4, from 1.25 to 1.55 pm. Apart from reading books, the Library has audio books as well as access to the internet and reference library.

Services at St. George’s Church during the coming week are a Family Eucharist at 9.30 am and Evening Prayer at 6.00 pm on Sunday, September 30, with Holy Communion on Wednesday, October 3, at 10.00 am. The Harvest Supper will be on Sunday, October 7.

Trinity Methodist Church will be holding their regular Service on Sunday, September 30 at Broad Oak at the usual time of 10.30 am, which this week will be conducted by the Revd. Ian Wales.
