St. George’s Church Flower Festival is being held next weekend from Saturday, August 25 to Bank Holiday Monday, August 27, with the theme of the festival flowers being “The Bible in Colour”.

Opening times are from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm on the Saturday and Monday and from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm on the Sunday which will be followed by Songs of Praise at 5.00 pm. One major change in the arrangements this year is that due to the Church Room not being available for use, the refreshments and the majority of stalls will either be in the Scout Hut in Stubb Lane or its adjoining field. Also taking place at the same time, as they have done for a number of years now, Brede Painting for Pleasure Group will be holding their Exhibition of Paintings at the Village Hall on Saturday and Sunday, August 25 and 26, from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. Paintings will be for sale and refreshments available.

Brede Cricket Club returns to the usual fixture list this Sunday, August 19, with a game against Sidley at the Recreation Ground starting at the earlier time of 2.00 pm. The following Sunday, August 26, they will be visiting Sedlescombe when it is a 2.30 pm start.

You may have seen advance warning notices in the local Observers about the road closures at Brede Hill for repairs that are scheduled to take place on two days between August 28 and September 2. The usual diversions through Sedlescombe and Cripps Corner will be in operation. You may also run into diversions between Horns Cross and the Kent border at Northiam again due to road repairs. Diversions for some of these works could take you as far as Hawkhurst before getting back to Newenden.

Tomorrow, Saturday, August 18, Trinity Methodist Church at Broad Oak is planning a ‘clean-up’ morning of the churchyard from 9.30 am. They would be grateful for any help from the local community, drinks and homemade cakes provided, but please bring your own tools or gloves, etc. The Sunday service will be at 10.30 am as usual and this week is being conducted by Mr. Owen Birch.

The Mobile Library calls again next week on Tuesday, August 21, from 3.00 to 3.40 pm in Oakhill Drive and 3.50 to 4.25 pm in Reedswood Road.
