Brede village voice

The big weekend so many people have been waiting for is almost upon us. We now have to hope that the weather will be kind to us after the recent brilliant sunshine.

Last week I listed part of the village’s programme for tomorrow and Sunday and here is the remainder of it for Monday and Tuesday. Before doing that though I think we should thank all the people who have been working behind the scenes in putting together an excellent selection of events suitable for all ages and interests – not an easy thing to do. There have been a number of local businesses and organisations that have made contributions and individual efforts such as Rhiannon and David Oliver’s Open Garden which raised just on £200 for the Jubilee events. To run any successful event there are usually a number of nameless people helping out in some way or other and they must be thanked for being there, but we must not forget the general public on whom everything rests to make things go well, be it wet or fine. Have an enjoyable, if busy, weekend and here is the rest of the programme. Themed scarecrows should also be erected. Photographs of your house, club or group should be e-mailed to [email protected] for inclusion in the Jubilee book.

Briefly, tomorrow has a sports tournament (Recreation Ground), BBQ and live music (Rainbow Trout) and evening entertainment (Village Hall) followed on Sunday with a Jubilee Lunch (Broad Oak), a special Thanksgiving Service (St. George’s) and an old-fashioned musical evening (Red Lion).

For Monday, June 4, things move to St. George’s Church. From 10.00 am to 5.00 pm events there will include Teddy Bear jumping from the tower, some interesting things on display, children’s art competition and ‘Hunt the Crown Jewels’. At 7.00 pm there will be live music from the “Jammin’ Codgers” with the Church being floodlit, and then finally a torch lit procession will make its way to light the beacon between 10.00 and 10.30 pm. A collection for local charities will take place at the beacon. The final day on Tuesday, June 5, sees Brede Cricket Club take on an all-comers team at the Recreation Ground from 11.00 am and the last event is at the Red Lion where they have their Jubilee Garden Party at 1.00 pm. Entertainment includes a brass band, Pimm’s bar and vintage cream teas. Bring a plate of food to share and the entry is free so dress up and join in the fun.

Brede Steam Engine Society will be opening their Giants on both Saturday, June 2, and Monday, June 4, this weekend at their usual time of 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.

Brede Cricket Club continue their programme on Sunday, June 3, with a game away at Westfield, starting at 2.00 pm. The following week they are back at Broad Oak with a game against Clive Vale.

Brede Mothers’ Union’s meeting for Wednesday, June 6, will be held at Hayesland Cottage, hosted by Rosemary Crouch.

The next Messy Church is being held on Tuesday, June 12, at 4.00 pm in Udimore Community Hall. It is for all ages and an adult must bring a child or vice versa.
