The 90-minute seminar will explore how eighteenth century novels helped to construct a national identity for the UK – and why those issues still resonate in a post-Brexit society.

English and Creative writing academic Professor Fiona Price will present the lecture, which is part of a new series of public lectures highlighting the research of acclaimed academics, scientists, and authors of the University.

Professor Price, who has published a series of books on romanticism and the aesthetics of political change, will use the lecture to discuss the topic of her recent monograph Reinventing Liberty.

It will explore – under the heading the rise of the historical novel: nation and liberty – how early novels were key yet contentious features in the construction of British national identity.

The event will also touch on Professor Price’s research into romanticism and her recent efforts as the founding member of the south coast-based eighteenth century research group.

Introducing her research, Professor Price said: “In a post-Brexit environment, when the separation of England and Scotland seems increasingly likely, early historical novelists’ efforts to construct Britain as a land of liberty are particularly resonant.

“Examining the political role and rights of the people, historical novelists tried to rethink the Union and to re-imagine the meaning of freedom for the modern, commercial nation.”

The lecture, which starts from 6.30pm, will be held at the University’s Cloisters Chambers at its Bishop Otter campus in Chichester, PO19 6PE.

Tickets are free for members of the public but should be reserved in advance at www.alumni.chi.ac.uk.
