Bridging The Gap

A 30-TONNE steel bridge has made its way from Doncaster to Angmering to form part of the Angmering bypass work.

It took two days for the bridge to arrive from Doncaster, where it was made, but only 10 minutes to put it in place after all the lifting equipment had been prepared.

The new bridge, which will provide a continuous link for pedestrians and equestrians between Angmering village and the area of Highdown east of the bypass, is an arched steel structure costing 150,000, including the supports it sits on.

The bridge, measuring 34 metres in length and three metres in width, is secured in place on top of concrete bank seats by just four bridge bearings.

It is made of tubular steel and unlike concrete bridges, which can be delivered in sections, the bridge was transported whole.

The Angmering by-pass is to run from the A259 roundabout just east of the Roundstone Garden Centre and run north to meet the A280, Water Lane. Work is due to be completed in spring, 2003.

Photographed by picture editor Mick Canning, the bridge is secured L44021H2.
