A city centre leisure centre is to close its swimming pools for 'much needed' works.

Freedom Leisure, which runs the Prince Regent Swimming Complex on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council, said the high-level roof glazing above the pools needs to be replaced.

It said the pool closures are planned in two stages, starting with the teaching pool from July 10 to August 11, and then the main pool areas from August 14 to October 13.

The rest of the centre, including the gym, will remain open throughout the works.

Chris Lovelock, Freedom Leisure area manager, said: “We apologise for the disruption that this closure to the pools will inevitably cause our customers but we are steadfast to keeping it as short as possible. These essential health and safety works to replace the roof glazing, which is now over 30 years old, are unfortunately unavoidable and imperative at this time.

"During this first stage of work, Freedom Leisure seeks to reassure swimmers that King Alfred Leisure Centre and St Luke’s Swimming Pool will be open to all and will accept swim memberships from the Prince Regent."
