Brilliant band makes a 'steel' for the cause

STEEL band players from Littlehampton Community School helped drum up some cash for Children in Need, playing a concert outside Café Oasis in Rustington on Saturday.

The nine players, accompanied by music teachers from the school, Lee Nelson and Steve Winter, played two half-hour sessions, mixing traditional Caribbean steel pan tunes with some more recognisable ones, such as Bob Marley's Jammin'.

The caf's customers and passers-by made donations and the concert raised 103.

"They were brilliant," said Sarah Clifton, who works at the caf and whose son Alex is in the band. "I think everyone thought it was a lovely thing to do and lots of people gathered round, clapping."

Lee Nelson said: "The band have been together for only about 18 months, but they play really well and are building up a good reputation in the area.

"They performed brilliantly and the weather was very kind to us as we were playing outside."

The band's next concert is in Rustington on December 2, when the village's Christmas lights are switched on.
