British landscape - myth and reality

WITH rural landscapes increasingly under threat it is a good time to assess why they matter to us.

On three Saturday afternoons in April and May three eminent lecturers will look at different aspects of the countryside.

The sessions are held at Bexhill Museum in Egerton Road from 2pm to 4.30pm.

On April 9 Dr Geoffrey Mead will discuss and illustrate Sussex Landscapes.

Then on May 7 Dr Graham Whitham will talk about English Landscape Painting : the Real, the Ideal and the Endangered.

Lastly on May 21 Colin Manton will explore Monuments and Magic - Fact and Fiction.

He says that England is a land rich in folklore, from the meaning of folk song and Morris dancing, incredible customs like cheese rolling, witch bottles and corn dollies to supernatural beliefs and extraordinary ceremonies like the Lewes bonfire processions.
