A TOUCH of Broadway glamour and glitz arrived at a school when girls took to the stage to perform in their annual charity dance show.

St Leonards-Mayfield School's The Sound of Musicals was full of vibrant colours, a kaleidoscopic of amazing costumes and a lively range of performances, which included dances from shows such as Fame, Cats and Grease.

The show were organised by a small group of Sixth Form girls who oversaw the whole production process from choosing the theme to holding auditions, choreographing dances, running practice sessions and editing music: Chloe Boumediene (18), Lauren Briscall (17), Hannah Buckley (18), Francesca Falato (17), Amy Hutchinson (18), Hannah Iles (17), Sophie Langridge (18), Sophie Meade (17), Ellen Meekins (17), Anouska Mercado (17), Ellie Orsler (17), Isabel Ruthven (17), Stephanie Tarling (17) and Billa Thompson (17).

The lighting effects were by Josie Duggan (14), Becky Fraser (16) and Annabel Higgins (15), and the sound by Tara Barry (15), Fiona Beattie (17) and Josie Duggan (14) added the finishing touches to create the Broadway theme.

More than 100 girls took take to the stage to perform dances in front of three sold out audiences made up of their parents, friends and staff.

All three shows were hosted by Sophie Scragg (18) and Josa Stemp (18).

An undoubted highlight was an appearance by six teachers in an Abba tribute dance, from the musical Mamma Mia. The last night of the show was celebrated by a special gala performance. As the audience arrived the 'paparazzi' were waiting to take pictures of the guests, all dressed in evening wear, as they walked down a red carpet and later enjoyed a reception of bubbly and canaps. Headmistress, Julia Dalton, commented: 'One of the highlights of our school year for the whole community is our amazing dance show. For me it is a real celebration of what we stand for, combining exuberance, enthusiasm, energy and expertise and excellence with exceptional creativity, imagination and stamina.

'Much of the hard work was done by the students themselves, many of them in their A Level year, encouraging and training girls from all age groups into giving stunning performances, as well as taking part, presenting and producing the show.'

In total 1,197 was raised, through donations, for the Demelza House Children's Hospice, a charity which provides hospice care for over 450 children with life-limiting illnesses and their families across Kent, East Sussex and South London. spectacular show '“ The Sound of Musicals '“ was full of vibrant colours, a kaleidoscopic of amazing costumes and a lively range of performances, which included dances from shows such as Fame, Cats and Grease.
