Worthing Borough Council cabinet members will debate the issue, with numerous options for clearing around 10,000 cubic metres of silt from the lake.

It follows a 1,500 signature petition from Adur and Worthing residents, concerned the lake’s condition was killing wildlife.

A report to councillors highlighted the silt could limit its capacity to act as a balancing lake to reduce flood risk.

Options for dredging include removing the silt, placing it around the edges of the lake or creating islands. Retaining the silt on site will dramatically reduce costs.

Silt ‘traps’ would also be installed to prevent significant build-up in future.

The preferred options would cost between £700,000 and £850,000, compared to up to £4million if the silt was moved off-site. Financial support will be sought from other interested parties. This includes Southern Water, the Environment Agency and Adur District Council.

The meeting will be at the Shoreham Centre, in Pond Road, Shoreham, from 6.30pm.
