Brownie team connect with nature for badge

As part of the Girlguiding London & South East England Region initiative ‘Growing Up Wild’, in partnership with the RSPB, 1st Pagham and Aldwick Brownies have been connecting with nature, while doing a good turn and community action.

Over the past few terms, Jan Atkinson from the RSPB has worked with the Brownies on a number of activities to increase their knowledge, awareness, enthusiasm and enjoyment of nature and
the outdoors.

This included a visit to Jan’s base at Pagham Nature Reserve in the summer, where the girls were able to observe a number of birds in their natural habitats as well as to go pond-dipping.

Angela Purser, leader in charge at 1st Pagham and Aldwick Brownies, said: “The most recent activity has seen the Brownies keeping their promise by making bird feeders as a good turn for local care home, Sandmartins.

“On Saturday morning, a small group of the Brownies went along with Jan and their leaders to present the bird feeders to Sandmartins.

“The girls enthusiastically explained to some of the residents how they had made the bird feeders by weaving willow and then filling
them with a mixture of lard and birdseed.

“They then went out into the garden in the rain
and hung them in the
trees, strategically positioned so that the residents will
be able to see the birds
feeding from them over the coming months.”
