Buckswood defendslow league table rank

A GUESTLING private school has defended being ranked second from bottom in the GCSE league table for Sussex.

Buckswood School, which describes itself as a ‘British school with a global outlook’, saw just 34 percent of pupils gaining five or more A* - C grade GCSE’s , including maths and English.

Lowest in Sussex was William Parker at Hastings with 33 percent and that has been labelled as a failing school by OFSTED.

Buckswood claims to offer 14 types of qualifcations in 79 subjects and says it should not be compared to other schools.

But many of these are not accredited by qualifications watchdog Ofqual.

A spokesperson for Buckswood said: “We are proud and passionate about our school differences and our pupils.

“Factoring in the International make-up of the student body, the accurate A*-C pass rate for the school is 57%, with Maths at 65% and, after this year’s English debacle, English at 62% (2011 85% and 2010 75%); but there is so much more to a Buckswood Education than 5 GCSEs .

“The School pride’s itself on doing what’s right for each individual pupil at the time that’s right for them – not what is going to inflate artificial League table rankings.

“This bespoke approach is appreciated by discerning local parents and families around the world.

“Most students have at least one GCSE under their belt before they start their GCSE courses in year 10 and many students sit exams early or take the harder IGCSE– all of which are not recorded in the league tables.

“380 students learn 3 languages, of which there are 14 to chose from. Where else locally could you find Arabic or Dutch, further maths, critical thinking and photography?
