Bumper total achieved in Lions' annual swimathon event

Cheques for just over £4,000 were handed out to groups who benefited from the latest Bognor Regis Swimathon.

The bumper total was raised by 15 organisations who fielded 34 teams between them in the 13th of the annual events held by the town's Lions club last October.

The largest number came from Bognor Regis Rugby Club which was raising funds for a tour.

Its members were presented with the perpetual trophy, for the first time, for gaining the most sponsorship.

Included in the presentation ceremony was a cheque for 100 for the Early Learning Centre. This replaces money raised in the Swimathon but stolen in a burglary at the hall where the centre meets.

The money was intended to buy digital camera equipment for the children and the Lions stepped in to ensure they would not lose out.

Anyone interested in taking part in this October's swimathon should contact Lion Richard Johns on 01243 262240.
