Neighbours were flabbergasted at the prospect and up to 10 attended a Seaford Town Council planning meeting on Thursday last week to have their say.

Mrs Herriott, of Princess Drive, told councillors how the bid had caused neighbours 'much distress and anxiety'.

Keith Baker, of Barons Close, added that the close was already congested with cars.

Cllr David Schueler agreed. He said: 'I think it is very much an over development. It is just not right at all to squeeze two bungalows in that area.'

Leader of the council Laurie Holland said it was a 'charming' close and the development would be out of keeping.

Cllr Bob Gower said he was amazed someone had the 'audacity' to submit the plans and raised concerns about access for emergency vehicles.

Councillors unanimously rejected the application on the grounds it was a back-land development, an overdevelopment, uneighbourly and lacked amenity space.

Their recommendation will go to Lewes District Council which will have the final say.
