Burgess Hill delivery driver fined after hit and run

Anthony Cameron, 33, of Condor Way, Burgess Hill, appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (March 12).

He pleaded guilty to three charges of driving without due care and attention, without insurance, and failing to stop after a road accident.

David Holman, prosecuting, told the court Natalie Smyth was jogging passed a garage exit in London Road, in Burgess Hill, on January 13, when she was struck by Cameron’s Rover car.

Cameron got out of his car and checked on Ms Smyth and several passers by approached them to check what had happened.

Cameron said he would move his car out the way of the garage exit before giving out his insurance details.

He got in his car and drove off.

Ms Smyth was left with bruises and grazes, back pain and her mobile phone screen was smashed.

Keith Goacher, defending, told the court Cameron was a delivery driver who drove eight to nine hundred miles a week.

He said the jogger was dressed completely in black and Cameron thought the exit was clear when he drove out the garage.

He said: “He asked her if she was OK, she said she was, then all of a sudden a lot of people appeared on the scene.

“He felt very intimidated and anxious. He wanted to go to a safe and quiet place then give the police his details.

“He drove to his ex-partner’s address and when he got there the police were already there.”

Mr Goacher added that Cameron did not realise his car insurance had lapsed by two days.

For failing to stop after the accident Cameron was given eight penalty points and fined £240.

For driving without due care and attention, he was fined £100.

He was made to pay compensation of £200 to fix Ms Smyth’s phone, plus costs of £25.
