James Cable, a labourer of no fixed address, broke into the home in East Street, Billingshurst, overnight on June 23.

A statement from Sussex Police said: “He conducted a thorough search of the property, which had only recently been moved into, and stole items including silverware, jewellery and cash.

“He also stole a wedding band and a chain, both of sentimental value, from the house, and 10 packets of tobacco from a Jaguar parked outside.

“At Lewes Crown Court on Thursday 10 December, the 32-year-old was found guilty of burglary and theft from a motor vehicle. He was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.”

Detective Constable Jonathan Stadius said: “The victims’ house was burgled in the early hours of the morning, while they slept, and a number of valuable items were stolen, including those of sentimental value.

“Cable was located sleeping in his vehicle in Hotham Park, Bognor Regis, on 27 June - three days after the crimes were committed.

“Inside his car was a wallet and mobile phone stolen from the burglary. He was arrested and taken into custody, before being charged with various offences.

“His conviction serves as a stark reminder that Sussex Police does not tolerate incidents such as these, and that officers are well equipped to investigate burglaries and bring criminals to justice.”
