The attempted burglary took place in Southdown Avenue, Broadwater, where the returning householders noticed the garden gate was open and a garden fork which did not belong to them was stuck in the grass. An attempt had been made to force open a window.

Police are examining the possibility that all five incidents were linked.

Detective Constable Emma Fields said: “We are appealing for anyone who noticed any vehicles or people acting suspiciously in those areas on Friday. Please contact us via [email protected] or call 101, quoting serial 1285 of 31/10. You can also call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Sussex Police have set up Operation Magpie to combat burglaries across the county.
