Burwash

The good warm and mainly dry preceding weather two weeks before the show bought out the best in the Rose entries but again bud drop in Sweet Peas affected early flowers and the lack of really hot weather the week before the show held back Delphiniums.

The judges were once again impressed by the high standard of exhibits on display and found it a hard job to select the winning entries.

In addition to the flower exhibits, we had five classes for handicrafts across a very wide variety of items with the star of the show this year being the selection of ‘Royal Cushions’ and ‘Hats for a Royal Garden Party’ which were absolutely wonderful and yet again demonstrated the talent we have in Burwash.

The children’s entries, mainly from Burwash School, of a portrait of the Queen created lots of interest, as did the cup winning entry of a Corgi dog made out of vegetables.

The show was attended by many visitors who enjoyed the mixture of flowers and handicrafts and the refreshments so kindly provided, as always, by Mary Chadburn and Isobel Salmond.

The Queens Challenge cup for the best Delphinium in the show was won by Lynda Maude-Roxby and the Harry Relf Trophy for the best vase of sweet peas was also won by Lynda Maude-Roxby.

The Court Farm Cup for the highest points in Roses was won by Lynda Maude-Roxby and the Kent & Sussex Courier rose bowl for the best rose exhibit together with the Ron Partner £10 Rose voucher was also won by Lynda Maude-Roxby.

In the Children’s Classes the Elizabeth Reid Cup was won by Gabrielle Moon.

In the craft classes the Rogers cup for the most points was won by Jacky Nash and the Paignton cup for the best exhibit was won by Michaela Terrill for her wonderful Royal cushion.

In the painting class, the Ward Memorial cup was won by Ijon Jenner.

Open Garden: Thank you to everyone who came along to the Open Garden at Elphicks, the beautiful home of Lorna and Yuti Chernajovsky, last Thursday and Friday. Despite the awful weather forecasts the weather was mainly dry which enticed a few visitors out. The teas were provided by the village hall committee and raise £203-80 the gardens had 39 visitors both days and with donation took over £350. Thanks to Lorna and Yuti for their hard work in preparing their lovely grounds

Music: Tonight is music night at the Pavilion in Burwash Common. You are all invited to go along and listen to the talent of local musicians and singers. Alternatively if you are a singer or play a musical instrument and would like a chance to perform in public the why not go along and join in. The fun begins at 8pm and the licenced bar will be open.

Age UK: The annual general meeting of Age UK Burwash and Burwash Wealk branch will take place on Thursday this week at the Burwash village hall from 6pm. This meeting provides an opportunity to meet and find out about the many things that they do. Refreshments will be provided. If 6pm in too early for you why not join them at 6.45pm when they will have a representative from the Fire and Rescue service who will provide a short talk on home safety. The meeting will probably last until around 8pm.

Flowers: The Burwash and district flower arrangement club are celebrating their Emerald anniversary this year and have arranged a special open evening with Nation Demonstrator Mr Michael Bowyer. It is being held at the Burwash village hall on Wednesday from 7pm. A buffet supper will be provided and a celebration cake will be cut. Burwash in Bloom: Don’t forget, today is the final call for entryies in the Burwash in Bloom competition. Entry forms are available from Jarvis Butchers and consist of two catergories, residential with three classes, hanging baskets, troughs and boxes and front gardens, and businesses with two classes, hanging baskets and boxes and troughs
