Beacon: It was good to see such a big crowd of people turn out for the lighting of the beacon at the Swan Meadow playing field last Thursday, in celebration of The Queen's 90th birthday. The chairman of the Parish Council planning committee Ijon Jenner, read a speech, followed by a pray from the rector Sally Epps and then a letter from Prince Charles read by Parish Council Chairman David Vereker. The lighting of the beacon was then performed by Eddie Workman MBE, who like the Queen had to revert to plan B when she lit the one at Windsor Castle. The beacon was soon well alight and a true beacon for the Queen. Despite the chilly conditions the 200 strong crowd lingered and chatted, before some of them headed out to Burwash Common where it was all repeated for the Burwash Common and Burwash Weald residents. Well done our villages on such a good turn out.

Bowls: The members of the Burwash short Mat bowls club held their annual Memorial cup tournament last Sunday. Play began after a roll of past members was read out by Chairman Keith Marden. The tournament was organised by Mary & Barry Taylor and twelve members played in two groups of round robin of games. There were some interesting results during the day, which was broken up with a delicious hot lunch prepared and served by Margaret Waterhouse, Mary Chadburn and Mary Taylor. After each player had played five games each, receiving 2points for a win and one point for each end won The Chairman Keith Marden 34 points and 43 shots beat the vice-chairman Alan Green 32 points and 40 shots into second place. Third was past winner Margaret Waterhouse 27 points and 38 shots. Keith and Alan were presented with their trophies by Captain Keith Wood. Thank you to everyone who came along and supported the event. The club will now break for the summer and will be back at the beginning of September.

Coins: On Saturday morning from 10.30am to 12 noon, there will be a collection by way of a mile of coins through the high street. The Burwash community fund committee have organised this to help raise a bit more for the Queen’s birthday party in the villages. Eddie Workman did this many years ago to raise money for a Royal celebration and was overwhelmed at the amount that was given, Wheel barrows were needed to collect it all in. Please do go along and lay a few coins on the pathway. Stewards will be on hand to oversee this and render assistance.
