Burwash

Party: The Party on the green which should have been held to celebrate St George’s day in April and was cancelled due to the weather, has been re-arranged for this Sunday to commemorate VE day. It is being held on the green at Strand Meadow/Hornbeam, Shrub lane Burwash. Anyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun. Bring your own chairs/blankets to sit on. Bring your own picnic including something for the barbecue if you like. There will be games for the children to play, adults can join in too. This is a very informal event intent on getting people together to enjoy each others company. The fun begins at 12 noon. Stay as long as you wish. Thanks must go to Rod Clifton who’s idea this was, we have had so much fun over the last two years at these parties.

Games: The NSPCC are inviting us to hold a board games event in every town and village to raise much needed funds to help them to continue the good work they do. Burwash will be joining in this fun event by holding it’s board game event on Friday 15th May in the Bear Motel Conservatory from 4pm to 7pm. entry will be £5 for adults, children by donation. There will be all manner of board/table games for young and old to enjoy. Why not come along after you have collected the children from school, but don’t forget to bring their grandparents too. Meeting: The Burwash common & Burwash Weald Playing fields and pavilion AGM will be held on Monday evening at 7.30pm. in the pavilion. You are all welcome to go along. The Pavilion have held some very interesting and successful events over the last year. The best has to be the auction of the craft ware of the late Jim Smith, when they raised over £4,200. A remarkable amount. They continue to host quiz evenings, music nights regular hirers include Pilates, Parent & Toddler group, Yoga and more. The licenced bar will be open at the meeting.

BLG: The ladies of the Burwash ladies Group will have their May meeting on Wednesday at the village hall from 2.15pm. The ladies of this group have a wide and diverse selection of meetings and talks. This time they will hear from Ian Everest who will talk about Sussex farm life in the 1950’s. If you would like to join the ladies do go along on Wednesday. The group also have an outing each month. The May outing is a boat trip on Bewl water on 27th.

Blooms: The Burwash in Bloom competition is being revived this year throughout the parish. There are two categories, Resident and Business. The residents classes are hanging baskets, window boxes/troughs and front gardens (which can be seen from the pavement) The cost of entering is £2 per class. The business classes are hanging baskets and window boxes. Entry is £5 per class. Entry forms are at various sites around the village. Closing date is 30th may The Butchers have kindly agreed to collect the entries form. Judging takes place on 27th June.

Quiz: The next fun general knowledge quiz evening at the Burwash Common Pavilion, will be held tonight at 8pm. Teams of 6 are welcome to take part. Entry is £2 and all proceeds are returned as prize money. To find out more and book a team in call Jan McCartney on 01435 882117. the licenced bar will be open.

Cakes: The committee of St Bartholomew’s Church are holding their second Big Bake off next Saturday. If you wish to take part, you need to obtain an entry form from the church website, the back of the church or from the broadsheet. Entries should be taken to the church between 12.00 & 1pm. After the judging the cakes etc will be sold.

Quiz: There is to be a fun general knowledge quiz at The Bear Motel on Saturday 16th in aid of Christian Aid week. Teams of six are invited to enter at £2 per person. Sausage and Mash at half time is optional. There will be a raffle. To find out more or to book a place call Peter Thompson on 01435 882856.

Postal Quiz: Another of the popular postal quizzes has come to an end. This time the answers were all towns and villages in Hampshire. Because of illness not so many quizzes were sold this time but we did raise £60 for the Christmas Get Together lunches for the senior members of our community. We had three people who managed to get 100% this time and after drawing a name out Anne Waters of Etchingham was the lucky winner. Thank you to everyone who took part. Another quiz will be ready for September.
