Burwash

Away: I am sorry that I missed last weeks column, but I made a sudden trip to Canada to be with my lovely Cousin who is having a really tough time at the moment. Barry & I felt she could use my support. I have been here for just over a week and in that short time I have seen some of the devastation left from the recent storm they suffered. Many of the residents of New Brunswick were without power for well over a week, trees are down and roads were blocked. Thankfully there don’t seem to be may if any buildings lost. The weather since I arrived has been very warm with night storms and rain. My Auntie is in the hospital and we visit everyday. Yesterday we went to the First Eel River Lake to the home of my cousin Alvin and family to meet the newest edition to the family, tiny little Cohen, John Caldwell Calhoun. We are four hours behind you which makes it interesting trying to contact back home. I shall be here until the end of September, but hope to be able to continue writing this column from here. If you have anything you would like me to add please email me on [email protected]

Congratulations: Last Friday, my great friend Sam Birch married her fiance Keith Morrison Williams at the registry Office before having a really special and unusual blessing and reception at The Bear Motel among friends and family. She wore a beautiful calf length turquoise dress wth a white top hat & veil. Their honeymoon is in Cyprus. We wish Sam & Keith a long and happy life together.

Sunflowers: For the last few months adults and children have been growing sunflowers and pumpkins. This is the second year of the competition, thought up by Rod Clifton. Last Saturday Rod and his fellow judges, Barry Taylor, Barry Lewis, Tania Cheshire, Ian Rees and Jean Holmwood went round the village with their tape measure to discover who had the tallest sunflower. The winner of the adults was Steph Stephens at 10 foot. Tania Cheshire was second. Jamie Stephens was the winner of the children’s flower. The measuring for the pumpkin will take place later in the year. If you think you would like to have ago at this fun competition call Rod Clifton or find the Sunflowers & Pumpkin site on facebook and let him know so he can add you to the list for next year.
