Burwash village voice

A very enjoyable quiz evening was held in the Burwash village hall on Saturday. Seven teams entered and were given a hard time by question masters Steve Bennett and Bill Anderson, who kindly stepped in for Terry Parker.

The questions were wide and varied easy among the difficult. The marathon was a stinker, name the capitals of the states of America, ( I swear they must have changed some!!). The food was hot and plentiful and an amazing number of prizes for the raffle helped to swell our profits. The Odd Bods were the winners with Steerage runners up. Odd Bods 2 were last and received the smarties. £225 - 25 was raised towards hall maintenance.

Burwash S. M. Bowls Club had a great days bowling on sunday when they met at the village hall for their Memorial Cup. Twenty players entered and played four games each. A delicious two course lunch was served with tea/coffee available all day. It was good to see partners come along to watch the games. Grateful thanks to all those who helped make the day such a special event, especially as it was our 21st birthday. The winner on 29 points and 35 shots was Valerie Cole, second was Alf Cole with 29 points and 34 shots, third was Mary Taylor with 28 points and 38 shots. The club pairs trophy was also awarded with John Ryan and Valerie Cole the winners and Geoff Jarvis and Ruth Robertson the runners up. The Pegeric cup which was played on Monday was won by Barry Taylor with John Ryan runner up. The Gavin Wood salver, for which members play all year was won by John Ryan with Alf Cole as runner up. They were all presented with trophies by the club chairman and captain Mary Taylor. The club has now closed for the summer, but will be actively looking to increase their membership by the time we return in September

The Burwash Horticultural Society will be holding their annual plant sale tomorrow, Saturday, morning at Mount House in the high street, by kind permission of Richard and Lynda Maude-Roxby. It is being held from 10 to 12 noon. Home grown plants by members of the society and the committee of the swings & things fund raisers will be available along with additional plants from Shank’s Nursery. A raffle and refreshments will also be available.

A re-union of ex pupils of St Philip’s school, Burwash common will take place on Monday afternoon from 2pm in the Masonic Hall Burwash Common. Anyone who was a member of the school, right up until it’s closure in the early sixties, is very welcome to attend. A plate of food will help while tea and coffee will be available. A good way to catch up with you old school mates.

A date for your diaries is Saturday 26th May when the village hall will be holding it’s third annual spring supper. Tickets will be £8 a person and includes a lovely two course supper and entertainment. After the fun of last year, tickets are likely to sell fast, they are available from the Burwash Newsagents.
