The council has agreed to allow the city’s waste transfer station and recycling facility at Hollingdean depot to open over the festive period.

This means refuse and recycling will be collected on all weekdays over Christmas and New Year, including Monday, December 26, Tuesday, December 27 and Monday, January 2.

Residents are also advised to check their collection days online, after the council took the decision to stop sending out printed refuse and recycling calendars, saving £25,000 a year.

The council also issued advice over recycling over the festive period.

Food and drink

Plastic bottles can go straight into your recycling box or bin, but remember to give them a quick rinse them and remove any plastic tops or lids.

Drinks cans, food tins and glass bottles and jars can also go in your recycling box or bin along with egg boxes, cardboard sleeves for food packaging and all tin biscuit boxes. Remember to keep your glass in a separate recycling box or bag so it doesn’t contaminate the other materials.

Wrapping paper and cardboard

Please only recycle wrapping paper - foil or paper covered in glitter can’t be recycled.

Flatten any cardboard boxes and paper bags to make space in your recycling bins and boxes. You can also visit a community recycling point or one of the city’s two recycling centres.

Christmas trees

Christmas tree recycling sites across the city will be open between January 2 and January 14.
