Business awards scheme planned for Uckfield

UCKFIELD could have its own business awards scheme next year.

The proposal for Uckfield Business Awards received overwhelming support when it was put to the town’s Chamber of Commerce meeting last month.

Committee member Adrian Corbin said there were enough firms in the town and Chamber of Commerce for something to be done to reward good business. It would be a boost for employees too. He added that business awards, with a dinner, would raise the profile of the Chamber in the town, increase membership and raise the profile of the organisation in Sussex.

Mr Corbin also highlighted the date of a Meet the Chambers Conference 2011 to be hosted by the Uckfield Chamber and held at Buxted Park Hotel in October. He said: “Let’s put Uckfield on the map.”

Chamber secretary Ian Blackaller said interest in the conference had, so far, been shown by Chambers at Eastbourne, Battle, Hastings, Worthing, Horsham, Billingshurst and by East Grinstead Business Association. He urged Uckfield members to register their interest as soon as possible.

Speakers at the conference will be Mid Sussex MP Nicholas Soames and Brighton and Hove Albion FC chief executive Martin Perry.

Nearly 100 members attended the meeting at Barnsgate Manor. Chamber president Peter Gale from accountants Swindells said he hoped progress was being made for derelict land at Uckfield railway station to be used as a car park with help from Wealden MP Charles Hendry. He also reported there were plans to replace and upgrade a damaged sign at the entrance to the Bellbrook Business Park.

New members who described their businesses were Fiona Hill of AFC Payroll Solutions (Blackboys,) David Timmons and daughter Victoria of The Wine Teacher (Newick) and from Uckfield, Sarah Edmunds of Sarah Edmunds Legal, Cathy Griffin of Vodawash and Mike Jackson from Fun Abounds Trampoline Centre.
