Business has shut its doors

Police are investigating the sudden closure of Battle estate and property letting agent Abbey Gate.

The family owned business, in Battle High Street, shut without warning on March 11 when a notice appeared on the door saying closed due to staff illness.

A number of people, who dealt with Abbey Gate, contacted the Observer to say they were concerned and had not been able to contact the company.

On Wednesday of this week East Sussex County Council made a statement to say: “Our trading standards team are aware of the situation with Abbey Gate Property Services, but all matters relating to this are being dealt with by Sussex Police.”

The business was established in the High Street since 1990.

It’s web-site states: “As an independent family run firm, we pride ourselves on our adaptable and friendly approach, and strive to give each client the individual attention and assistance they need.”

A letter from Abbey Gate went out to landlords on March 16 and 17 .

It stated: “We write to inform you that with effect from todays date Abbey Gate Property Management will no longer be trading, and our Battle office will be closed.

“We have written to the tenants of the property passing on your contact details and payment information for further rent payments to be made direct to you.”

Another Battle estate agents Castle Estates came to the rescue, offering to help and advise Abbey Gate clients.

They posted a notice on the window of the closed business which read: “If you would like to have a conversation about the situation or require any assistance contact us.”

Peter Broomhead, from Castle Estates said: “No-one has been able to speak to anyone from Abbey Gate and there has been lots of speculation.

“We are just trying to help all we can.”
