The wardens will link firms in the town centre and Sussex Police and are due to start in the coming weeks.

The partnership is aimed at tackling the crime and anti-social behaviour that affects the retail sector and the town’s economy.

The scheme is funded by the Home Office and the Southern Co-operative.

Bognor’s town centre manager, Toyubur Rahman, says in his latest newsletter: “They have communication links to police, local businesses and Shop Watch.

“They will provide a presence a few days a week, (be) able to attend incidents, report crimes electronically to police direct and act as ambassadors for the town.”

Five Business Wardens have been deployed initially to Eastbourne and Littlehampton to provide a welcome presence in the retailing areas and connect their businesses with the police. “Feedback has been highly supportive,” added Mr Rahman, “providing a visible reassurance for many shoppers and an improved atmosphere to the town centres.”

n Mr Rahman has also highlighted the falling vacancy rate among town centre premises at 23 out of 261 ground floor shop units - the lowest for at least five years. But he also said charity shops had increased to 16.
