Parking petition plea on agenda

A petition calling for a relaxation of the stringent parking rules in Lewes will be debated in May.

Presented by Lewes Town Councillor Stephen Catlin, the petition calls for free parking in the town on Saturdays and for 30 minutes free parking on School Hill Monday to Friday.

It was signed by nearly 2,000 people and will be considered by Lewes District Council following a survey by East Sussex County Council on the use of School Hill and High Street on-street parking spaces.

Meanwhile the Joint Parking Board will next week discuss the possibility of introducing parking offers to attract shoppers to the town in the build-up to Christmas.

A trial run was given in 2013 to four-hour free parking on two dates in December, which proved a success and increased trade in the town during the afternoon period when business traditionally slumps a little.

Cllr Catlin said: “It is heartening that the idea of giving the town’s trade a boost for Christmas has been taken seriously.”
