Businesses worried about climate change

Businesses are worried about the economic impact of climate change, a survey by an environmental group has revealed.

Transition Town Lewes surveyed 22 organisations in Lewes and found

more than half of the businesses were concerned about climate change and rising energy prices, and three quarters thought it would seriously affect their businesses within five years.

Patrick Crawford from Transition Town Lewes said: 'Frankly we were a bit surprised by the results.

'Businesses seem to be taking the issues really seriously.

'We were also pleased to see so many businesses prepared to take positive action in the face of these potentially negative changes.

'Many are lacking basic information, such as how to work out their carbon footprint, but the creativity and energy is there.

'We at TTL are trying to help provide this information.'

In the survey, business owners said they were worried about adverse weather conditions, flooding, rising transport costs, reduced tourism, water shortages and rising product prices.

Parking and recycling cardboard were also raised as significant issues.

Transition Town Lewes has pledged to carry out a series of surveys to establish problems and starting to identify positive solutions towards the changes.

Work has already begun on a second larger survey involving more businesses.
