Businessman killed by alcohol

ANXIOUS to expand his property agency, a Worthing businessman drank himself to death through wining and dining his clients.

A Worthing inquest heard on Thursday that Albert Barnes, aged 50, was found dead at his Marine Parade home on August 6.

Mr Barnes, a diabetic, had not been to work for several days and his body was discovered after colleagues became worried by his absence.

Coroner Roger Stone was told that when Mr Barnes's business started to expand, he started drinking more and more frequently as he entertained clients both at lunchtimes and in the evenings.

A pathologist's report said that Mr Barnes died from acute alcohol toxicity, liver damage and chronic pancreatisis.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Mr Stone said: "He consumed more than his body could stand on this occasion."
