Paul Burnett, owner of Moran Bros. in Montague Street, had just returned from a holiday when he received a call yesterday from a family member that the shop window was broken.

When he arrived at the shop, police were at the scene. The incident is believed to have happened between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, and it is thought no-one was injured.

Mr Burnett, 43, said: “It did surprise me to see it smashed, but when you see what goes on here day in, day out it seems run of the mill. But I never expected my window to be smashed, especially by a brick; someone would have to have walked here with a brick in their hand in broad daylight with lots of people around.

“I don’t know who would do something like this. I’m totally bemused by it. I’ve got no grievances with anyone; I’m not from around here so the only people I know are my customers.”

According to Mr Burnett, witnesses saw a black car pull up a few metres from his shop, and someone stepped out and threw the brick before getting back in the car and driving off.

Mr Burnett called a glazer to secure the broken window until it gets fixed next week, but the damage means that he will not be able to use his front counter to display meat.

“This is the selling point to my shop; with nothing in there for people to see they will think I’m closed.

“I’m still going to open and sell from my other counters. This butchers isn’t about a pane of glass; it’s about the quality and service I give to my customers.”

Although there was no meat on display the shop was trading today, and Mr Burnett said his customers were supportive, with one saying ‘enough is enough’.

Sussex Police is investigating the incident and has been approached for comment.
