Butlins' rusting railings finally to be replaced

Rusting seafront railings around Butlins in Bognor Regis will be replaced this year.

Resort director Jeremy Pardey has pledged the current deteriorating metal security bars will go in November.

The two-metre high barrier stretches for about half-a-mile along the promenade in between Clarence Road and Longbrook park where Butlins meets the seafront.

Its appearance has worsened in the past year because it is so exposed to the corroding salt air.

The sight of the rust patches was criticised at last week's meeting of Bognor Regis Civic Society which focused on Butlins.

Mr Pardey said the critics were right. "That area is the worst of the fencing around the resort. I have walked along the promenade and I accept the fencing is unacceptable," he stated.

"I am working on replacing it right now. There are much better ways to manage that area. I am looking for something which will not rust, which is easy to maintain and pleasing to the eye."

Mr Pardey said he had also compiled a three-year plan to improve the boundary of the entire 60-acre site.

An initial step had seen scores of ivy plants and flowering bushes planted around the fencing to lessen its harsh visual impact.

He explained: "I am looking to see how the fence could be made more attractive."

But he said a fence would always remain. It was essential for the safety of the guests on the site and children in particular.

An entry restriction was also needed to meet the conditions of Butlins' liquor licences which limited the sale of alcoholic drinks in the evenings to staying guests.
