AS AUSTERITY bites, more and more of us are looking to make, bake and create the things we need ourselves.
Now Louise Burton from Buxted has launched ‘Make It Yours’ workshops aimed at helping people rediscover traditional crafts.
Mum of two Louise, 43 said: “We’re aiming to promote life’s simple pleasures, while giving people achievements to be proud of at the end of the day.”
‘Make It Yours’ is based at three venues - Hendall Manor Barns (near Herons Ghyll,) Buxted and Offham. The workshops offer days studying - and then making – family gifts, projects for the home and garden, weaving, basketmaking, baking, blending and brewing beauty and health remedies and sewing fabrics. There’s even one designed to help teenagers cook for themselves.
Louise worked in events and hospitality so she knows how organise a day so people of all levels of ability obtain the maximum benefit. She said: “We encourage people to take time out to relax and discover the simple pleasure of a handmade project. Our workshops are a wonderful antidote to modern day life. Now there’s never been a better time to hone old skills that are so relevant today.”
Students are guided by experts such as wild food masterchef Robert Fallon who helps guests forage and cook a feast over an open fire; naturopath Lucinda Warner and Cordon Bleu cookery guru Yolanda Nash.
