Cab convoy brings children for holiday treat

A great day out by the seaside was enjoyed by scores of disabled youngsters from London.

Sixty black cabs, carrying 151 children and 128 carers, arrived in Hastings on Wednesday afternoon for their annual trip.

Town mayor Maureen Charlesworth was at Sainsbury's, in Sedlescombe Road North, to welcome the visitors and lead the convoy into the Old Town.

There they enjoyed the attractions, including Underwater World and the rides.

Later, they headed up to the Hastings Centre on The Ridge where they enjoyed a fish 'n' chip supper.

Cllr Richard Vallery, a former Hastings publican, is a volunteer helper at the event every year.

He said: "It was a fantastic day. The mayor was brilliant - she danced with the kids, served the food and handed out goodie bags.

"Fortunately the weather was good, and I think everyone had a great time. It was very exhausting for us, but well worth the effort.

"Lots of the kids who take part in the visit are terminal. They won't know the pain and troubles and trials of life. They're just so happy and full of innocence. It's humbling to help them for just for one day."

The event is organised by the Albany charity, which is run by London taxi drivers to help disabled children.
