Cabinet green light to green bins

Efficiency triumphed over economy when Rother District Council decided where to buy its next lot of green wheelie bins.

A further 9,500 green bins are still needed as the Council aims to complete the final phase of green garden waste collection as soon as possible.

Cabinet members were told by head of service Madeleine Gorman this week that one company would deliver each bin at a cost of 17.95 while the other would charge 19.00 per unit.

The cost difference is 10,000, or five percent, and as this was not the cheapest option Cabinet approval was required for the order to go ahead.

The total cost for placing the final order will be 180,000, which is within the available budget provision.

Madeleine Gorman's feeling was that the company providing the more expensive product was reliable and likely to provide the service as agreed.

Problems and hold-ups with the original company resulted in delays and mistakes in green bins being sent out to households and "additional but unquantifiable cost and management effort" dealing with enquires from householders contacting the Council to find out when their bins would be distributed.

Councillor Ian Jenkins asked if she was "100 percent" confident the company would deliver the green bins on time.

She replied that "bitter experience" had taught her not to be too confident but commented: "I am as certain as I can be...that we have a much higher chance."

Leader Councillor Carl Maynard added: "In a recession buying British is certainly something we should be wholeheartedly embracing."
