Cadet is youngest to pass tests

The 13-year-old was tested on his knowledge of rope work, rigging, splicing and whipping, canvas work and decorative rope work, while practical tests included working in a team to rig equipment such as sheer legs, gyns and derricks.

Last year, just 45 out of 14,000 cadets across the UK were awarded the qualification.

Ben is fairly new to Royal Marines Cadets – which is part of national youth charity Sea Cadets – but, according to dad Judd, has already enjoyed a number of opportunities on offer.

Judd said, “He has really taken to it and has been involved in quite a few things. He raised money last year for Remembrance Sunday, and he plays the cornet. This week, he went clay pigeon shooting, and he goes sailing.

“He does it all.

“It isn’t about winning for Ben. He excels at what he does, but for him, it’s the taking part that’s important. I’m very proud of him.”

Marine Cadet Ben, who would like to be a doctor with the Royal Marines when he is older, is one of the youngest to be awarded the Advanced Seamanship Qualification.

Ben said, “I was really surprised to have passed.

“Everyone on the course was older, about 15, I was the youngest on there.

“I like trying different things with Royal Marines Cadets.

“I like physical training, as I find it fun.”

The Advanced Seamanship is part of a national partnership with Carnival and Sea Cadets.
