Members of the 1140 (Steyning) Air Cadets were armed with charitable sponges and buckets at Mayberry Garden Centre in Portslade on Saturday.

Despite the wet weather, more than £300 was raised for the Poppy Appeal, which was presented to the Royal British Legion on Remembrance Sunday.

Andy Hesketh, manager at Mayberry, said the cadets’ work rate was fantastic.

“We were all impressed with how hard the team worked giving customers’ cars the once over in the name of charity. It’s great to get involved in fundraising that is so poignant at this time.”

The car wash was part of the Tate family garden centre’s way of marking of the Great War centenary. There was a free exhibition from the Southwick Society in the coffee shop, and memories of British soldiers and nurses from the front line placed around the garden centre, to allow customers to come across them and pause for a moment.
