CALLS for zero tolerance of youths drinking and throwing down empty beer cans in the streets of Uckfield were made at a meeting last week.

Mr Clive Spreadbury told the annual town meeting that old people found it very daunting to go out in the evening when gangs of youths stood about drinking.

He said that Eastbourne police had a zero tolerance policy on drinking in the streets and he would like to see the same policy in Uckfield.

Mayor Cllr Barrie Murray said that police squad cars had been in town on Friday and Saturday nights to keep young people on the move and not allow them to congregate and efforts were being made to deal with the problem.
