CALL FOR MORE A27 WORKS

A SCHEME TO create a new pedestrian crossing and joint cycle-footpath at Drusilla's roundabout on the A27 is fine but doesn't go far enough.

That's the view of Sussex Enterprise which welcomes the proposal.

But chief executive Mark Froud said: 'We believe traffic congestion and safety on the A27 will not be completely solved unless large schemes are also taken forward '“ such as the Beddingham level crossing and improvements around Arundel and Worthing.

He went on: 'The area around Alfriston is very popular with walkers as the countryside is so beautiful.

'Currently it is extremely difficult for ramblers to cross the A27 safely as there is fast flowing traffic with few pedestrian crossings.

'We welcome any improvements that will improve the safety of our roads.

'Unfortunately however, improvements at Berwick will not go far to solve the bigger problem of traffic on the A27.

He cited significant bottlenecks around Arundel, Worthing and at the Beddingham level crossing where traffic regularly comes to a standstill causing congestion, pollution and wasting time.

'Results from our Voice of Business survey in 2004 show that six out of ten businesses in Sussex which responded feel that the road network in the county does not serve their needs.

'We would therefore encourage the Highways Agency to invest in further improvements on the A27 as businesses are crying out for them.'
