The competition, to find the best kept gardens and allotments, was launched last week by Littlehampton Town Council at Ferring Nurseries, which is once again backing the event.

The tournament is run to recognise and reward the hard work that so many of the town’s residents put into their gardens and allotments.

The chairman of the town council’s allotments sub-committee, councillor Jill Long, said: “This long-established competition has grown in popularity throughout the years which demonstrates that we have many keen gardeners of all ages and abilities in our town.

“The winter weather has not been kind to our gardens, but with spring already promising to give us plenty of sunshine, we can all finally get back to the tending.”

The competition aims to encourage gardeners of all ages and abilities to take part.

This year, the town council is keen to see the green-fingered spirit bloom in the hearts of children from across the town.

Youngsters are being urged to take part in the grow the tallest sunflower challenge.

Even those residents who may not know the difference between their roses and their hydrangeas can get stuck into the competition.

They can nominate a neighbour whose gardens help to brighten up the street that they live in.

The only condition is that the nominees must live within the BN17 postcode.

Allotments are automatically entered into the competition.

Alternatively they can be completed online on the town council’s website, www.littlehampton-tc.gov.uk

The judging will take place on July 11 by five judges, including the Littlehampton mayor and members of Littlehampton allotments and leisure gardens association.
