Camber village voice

If it wasn’t the beautiful sunshine bringing folk in their thousands to share our beach, it was the Horse and Dog Show at Salts Farm, and failing either of those there was the Rye Marine Festival. Sadly an accident also added to the confusion. We ended up marooned in spite of many people’s best efforts. I saw Dan our Police Community Support Officer on the gate at the Horse and Dog Show in all his gear in that heat working valiantly to keep traffic moving. 5 hours later when I returned, he was still working hard. Thanks Dan, that was a duty I don’t think any of us would have wanted.

Terry had to do some nifty footwork last Friday as Camber Country didn’t have any musician due to Dave King losing his voice. Terry found Tony Barker a most accomplished muso who plays the guitar, banjo, and two kinds of saxophones! They were treated to music from The Shadows, Lonnie Donnigan, and George Formby as well as C&W. Well done Terry and thanks Tony.

My family is joining together for a most significant celebration on Saturday when my daughter Catherine is marrying Matthew at the Town Hall in Rye. The Town Crier will announce the marriage; there will be speeches at the Riverhaven Hotel followed by a private party in the Camber Memorial Hall. The wedding has a 1950’s theme complete with cars. They will be noticeable in the village! It’s was important to Catherine to be able to bring the celebration back here to Camber. It’s good that the Memorial Hall has so recently had a face lift. It’s a truly international event, with Catherine’s brother Chris and his wife Georgie coming back from South Africa, and two other villagers, Peter and Karen coming back from Nigeria. (And best wishes from everyone at your old newspaper, Catherine)

As reported in last weeks Observer, Camber Kite Week was a great success. Congratulations to Anthony Skinner who organised it all. In the middle of it he also took time to arrange to help an injured cat a couple of doors from where he lived. He set the ball rolling before going back to his responsibilities managing the final party celebrating the end of Kite Week. Between Anthony and some other helpful people with the cat’s welfare at heart, its owners were traced and informed of its plight. Again, thank you Anthony and the other villagers who contributed their individual knowledge to assist it.

There was an informal and relaxed family service last Sunday at the church. The numbers were swelled by holiday makers who are always made very welcome. Indeed some regulars come back year after year as they return to enjoy a holiday with us. Next week Rev David Frost is celebrating for us, 10.30am with a cuppa to follow if you have the time.
