Campaign for town to have one council

MAJOR doubts about the future of the multiplex plan in Bognor Regis have given strength to a campaign for a single council.

Matt Cosgrove said last week’s news about Vue Entertainment, the new owner of Apollo Cinemas, saying it would not be following up the interest in the regeneration scheme for the Regis Centre, showed the need for residents’ views to become strong.

“The current system means we have six small councils representing their patches,” he said.

“Surely, they do a good enough job. But is this sufficient for the times we live in and the reality of that urban area?”

He said a sole council for the area from Elmer to Pagham tie in with peoples’ views of Bognor rather than just the central area which is all the current town council serves.

The new council would provide all the coastal area with a strong voice.

“Such a town council, around 24 councillors, would have considerable spending and political clout.

“It would own the Picturedrome and five community halls, run Town Force and influence planning and other processes.

“It would be in a good position to take over services from Arun and save costs,” he said.
