Wealden has been put firmly on the tourist map after a major campaign was launched to encourage more visitors into the area.

In partnership with the district’s tourist attractions, Wealden District Council has launched its ‘We do Sussex’ campaign to promote the district’s hidden countryside and coastline.

The area currently attracts six million visitors every year and now tourists can benefit from a guide book to some of the district’s beauty spots and historic buildings.

Cllr Roy Galley, cabinet member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said: “We are working closely with over 80 tourist businesses from the district to promote their attractions and facilities and encourage visitors to spend more time in this wonderful part of Sussex. From the beauty of the High Weald to the ever-changing face of our coastline we have so much to offer – and much of it is off the well-trodden visitor path.

“In Wealden, We Do Sussex offers a haven of rural peace and beauty to those visitors who take the trouble to discover us.

“Previously, we have worked with neighbouring councils to promote a wider area of East and West Sussex. This year we are focussing our resources solely on Wealden to make sure it gets pride of place on the tourist map.”

With more than 100,000 visitor guides being distributed across the south east and beyond, We Do the Best Attractions in Sussex, gives details of attractions in Wealden and has been produced as part of the initial phase of the We Do Sussex campaign.

They are being circulated at visitor locations within two and a half hours driving time of Wealden as well as at restaurants, cafes, pubs, historic gardens and visitor attractions throughout the district.

Cllr Galley added: “We expect a lot of visitor interest in our new website which has been especially created to provide information on our attractions and a calendar of events to provide opportunities for visits throughout the year.

“With the majority of visitor enquiries now coming through the web, it is important we have a strong presence on the internet. Nearly six million visitors come to Wealden every year, spending over £280 million and supporting over 6,000 jobs. They are an important part of the economy. We wish to encourage everyone to come and enjoy Wealden and to support our tourism businesses in a sustainable way that conserves the countryside that everyone has come to enjoy.”
