Running from Monday June 6 the annual nationwide initiative highlights the challenges unpaid family and friend carers face, while also recognising the contribution they make within families and communities. West Sussex County Council, Carers Support West Sussex, and Clinical Commissioning Groups are asking people to show their support by helping to build ‘Carer Friendly Communities’, which help carers to look after their loved ones within local towns and villages.

Peter Catchpole, cabinet member for adult social care and health, said: “We want the contribution that carers make throughout West Sussex to be celebrated.

“That is why we’re encouraging all members of the community to consider what they can do to help build carer-friendly communities across the county.”

Everyone has a part to play in recognising the importance of carers, both paid and unpaid.

For the latter, the support of local employers is paramount to help them balance the demands of their caring and working lives.

Jennie Musgrove, chief executive at Carers Support West Sussex, said: “Every carer needs a life outside of their caring role to help maintain their own health and wellbeing.

“Carers Support West Sussex offer unpaid family and friend carers information, advice and personal support as well as a range of other vital services.

“The role of a carer can become isolating and a difficult balancing act. Easy access to the right support can make a huge difference and is an essential lifeline to many.”

Events will be held across West Sussex aimed at providing carers with more information on the support available to them, as well as social activities.
