Can you park on Battle market site?

Battle councillors described the pedestrianised area as ‘dangerous’ at a meeting last week after counting more than 20 cars there.

Apparently, some were driving up to 20mph when leaving which Cllr Andrew Ratcliffe said was a danger to children and dog walkers.

Mayor Margaret Kiloh said some of the cars could be Jempson’s employees and that the supermarket owners were looking into buying the land but who from was unknown.

“I have heard that they wanted to take it over but I am not sure if they have yet,” she said.

“We need to establish who the owners are as it is unclear at the moment.”

Jempson’s confirmed it had allowed people to park there as it had an agreement with the market organisers to use it when it’s empty.

Owner Stephen Jempson said the company was looking to resolve the situation.

“Jempson’s are in discussion with the relevant parties and it is hoped that this matter will be resolved shortly,” he said.

However, district councillor Kevin Dixon said at the meeting whoever owned it would need permission from the council to use it as a car park.

He said the area is not designed as a car park, he would look into it and ‘enforce’ any restrictions on behalf of Rother District Council.

The dire parking situation in Battle and across Rother has been regularly raised and this may be another example of people bending the rules with no danger of a ticket due to the police’s refusal to enforce restrictions.
