Canoeist rescued off Worthing beach

A CANOEIST had to be rescued from the sea off Worthing this afternoon.

Ambulance crews carried the man from the water’s edge up to the promenade after he got into difficulties near Grand Avenue.

Eye witnesses said the man had come out of his canoe and others nearby had come to his rescue.

It was believed he had become trapped under his canoe and he had taken in a lot of water.

But a spokesman for Sussex Police said the man had managed to get himself back into the canoe.

“He had become tired while out paddling in his canoe,” he added.

He was taken to Worthing Hospital for a check-up but it was not believed he was seriously affected by the incident.
