Car driver killed at notorious black-spot

The fatal accident occurred shortly after 11pm on Easter Saturday when a Volkswagen Passat car collided with a foreign registered HGV on a narrow stretch of the A259 at East Guldeford, near Offens Farm.

A 31-year-old man from St Leonards, died in the collision.

The road was closed for six hours while police and emergency services carried out investigations at the scene and Highways cleared the road of debris.

Police say the driver of the Passat was travelling eastbound when he crossed onto the opposite carriageway and collided head-on with the lorry which was travelling westbound.

A 43-year-old man from the Czech Republic, who was driving the HGV, suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital in Kent.

The road, which has been closed earlier this year for re-surfacing work, has a notorious reputation for accidents.

East Guldeford residents have frequently had walls and fences damaged by vehicles which have lost control on the twisting road and a few years back a coach ended up in a ditch.

There have also been incidents in the past of vehicles colliding with railway line barriers on the road.

Residents have long campaigned for speed restrictions and traffic calming measures on the road.

Figures show there were 38 collisions on the A259 crossing Romney Marsh in 2010.

Three involved fatalities, two involved serious injuries, 19 involved slight injuries and 14 were damage only.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, on Saturday, or saw the blue Passat prior to the incident is asked to call 101 quoting Operation Viaduct.
