'Car park abuse costing thousands'

HOW MUCH public money is being lost by misuse of Lewes car parks? Lewes resident Will Rogers fears the loss is considerable.

Mr Rogers owns a shop opposite the West Street car park, and he couldn't help noticing that the same red car, with an unusual number plate, was parked there all day, every day.

The car park is a two-hour maximum pay and display facility operated by Lewes District Council.

The red car was not the only vehicle to stay all day, every day in the same car park without ever receiving a ticket.

Mr Rogers calculates that tens of thousands of pounds are being lost by allowing vehicles to park all day in a short-term car park.

Much of this is revenue loss from the car park fees, but the remainder is the cost of blocked parking spaces to Lewes businesses and services.

'These are our car parks, our resources, and our money. Let's make sure they are properly managed,' he said.

A spokesman for Lewes District Council which supervises car parks said: 'We have explained to Mr Rogers that within the resources available we aim to achieve even coverage of our car parks by attendants.

'In addition we have a programme of random inspections that supplement the normal visit.'
