On Saturday (March 29), crew members at the Littlehampton Fire Station, in Maltravers Road, spent the day cleaning cars in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity.

The team used hoses, rags, sponges and buckets of water to wash 40 cars in return for a donation.

The event raised £220 for the charity, which seeks to improve the quality of life for serving and retired firefighters, other fire personnel and their families.

And the weekend’s fund-raising effort will be given an added boost by members of Littlehampton’s Madeira Dancing and Singing Group, who pledged to donate a further £600 to the charity.

Firefighter James Diston said: “We’re absolutely delighted they’ve raised such a fantastic amount. It’s brilliant to get so much support from people in the town - it means a lot to us that people appreciate what we do as firefighters.

“Age catches up with all of us and all those injuries we pick up over the years show. The charity helps rehabilitate retired and serving firefighters. Also, if the worst happens, the widows or orphans will be helped.”
