A car when you need one '“ not when you don't

TRANSPORT Minister Norman Baker launched the Lewes Car Club at the Market Tower on Friday.

The car-sharing scheme is a Lewes District Council initiative, in conjunction with Commonwheels, and seeks to encourage drivers to change their motoring patterns thus saving money and reducing air pollution.

Having paid a £25 joining fee, members will have a choice of two cars for hire. They pre-book a time slot over the phone or online and pay an hourly rate every time they use the vehicle.

The Ford Fiesta Econetic cars will be based in Pinwell Road and East Street, Lewes.

A district council spokeswoman said: “People who just need a car occasionally and don’t want the expense and hassle of owning and running one will find becoming a member of the car club very convenient and easy to do.

“We are providing two pay by the hour low emission cars.”
